Torah Jane Bright (born 27 December 1986) is an Australian former professional snowboarder. She is known as Australia's most successful Winter Olympian. Torah has won Olympic gold and silver medals. She also has two X Games gold medals and many other awards.

In 2014, Torah Bright made history. She was the first Olympic athlete to qualify for all three snowboarding events. These events are halfpipe, slopestyle, and boarder-cross.

Early Life and Family

Torah Bright was born in Cooma, New South Wales. This was on 27 December 1986. She is one of five children. Her parents are Peter and Marion Bright.

Her sister Rowena learned that the name "Torah" means "bearer of a great spiritual message." So, they chose this special name for her.

Torah grew up in Cooma, near the Snowy Mountains. She first started as a downhill ski racer. Her brother, Ben, is also a professional snowboarder and was her coach. Her older sister, Rowena, competed in the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics in alpine skiing.

Snowboarding Career Highlights

Torah Bright uses a goofy stance when snowboarding. This means she rides with her right foot forward.

She started competing in World Cup events early in her career. In 2006, Torah won a silver medal at the Winter X Games in Aspen, Colorado. The next year, she won a gold medal in the women's superpipe event. She was the first Australian snowboarder to win gold at the Winter X Games.

In 2007, Torah also won the Nissan X-Trail Nippon Open. She then won the World Super Pipe Championships. Later that year, she became the 2007 TTR world champion.

Olympic Success

At the Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Torah was chosen to carry the flag for Australia. She qualified first for the women's halfpipe final. Even after some falls in training, she performed amazingly.

In the final, she crashed on her first run. But she came back strong on her second run. She scored 45.0, which was the highest score. Torah Bright won Australia's fourth Winter Olympics gold medal.

At the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Torah made history again. She entered three different snowboarding events. These were slopestyle, halfpipe, and boarder-cross. She finished 7th in slopestyle. Then, she won a silver medal in the women's halfpipe. This was Australia's first medal at the 2014 Games. This medal also made her Australia's most successful female Winter Olympian.

Beyond Competition

After the 2014 Olympics, Torah competed less often. In 2020, she officially announced her retirement from competitive snowboarding.

Torah also appeared on Dancing with the Stars in Australia. In 2020, she was in a documentary film called Out of Bounds. In this film, she snowboarded in extreme places around the world. She said the journey inspired her.

Torah Bright has a lifelong sponsorship with Rhythm Snowsports. This company is in her hometown of Cooma. She also has a big sponsorship with Roxy. Roxy is a brand for action sports, especially for girls.

She even helped design a new line for Roxy called the "Bright Series." This series includes her own snowboard, the Roxy Eminence. She also has sponsors like Subway and Boost Mobile.

Personal Life

Torah Bright is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

She is married to snowboarder Angus Thomson. They got married in September 2015. They have two sons, born in July 2020 and May 2023.
