The tournament started a long time ago, in 1973. Back then, it had a different name: the Toray Sillook Championships. Over the years, its name changed a few times. It was called the Sillook Open in 1976. Later, it became the TV Championships in 1982. In 1983, it was known as the Queens Grand Prix.
The tournament got its current name, the Pan Pacific Open, in 1984. For many years, it was played indoors on a special carpet surface at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium. But in 2008, the tournament moved. It started being played outdoors on hard courts at the Ariake Coliseum.
The Pan Pacific Open has been a very important tournament. From 1993 to 2008, it was a Tier I tournament. These are some of the biggest events in tennis. Then, it became a Premier 5 tournament in 2009. Later, it changed to a Premier event in 2014. A famous tennis player, Martina Hingis, has won the singles title five times.
