The Tordera (which means La Tordera in Catalan) is a river found in Catalonia, Spain. It flows right through the town also named Tordera.

The Tordera River's Journey

The Tordera River is about 55 kilometres (34 mi) long. It starts high up in the Montseny Massif mountains. From there, it flows all the way to the Mediterranean Sea, where it empties out. On average, the river carries about 5.01 cubic metres per second (177 cu ft/s) of water.

River Branches and Protected Areas

The Tordera has several smaller rivers that join it. These are called tributaries. Some of its main tributaries include the Riera de Gualba, Riera de Arbúcies, Riera de Santa Coloma, and the Riera de Valmanya.

The river also flows through some special natural places. These are protected areas like the Parc Natural del Montseny and the Parc Natural del Montnegre i el Corredor. These parks help protect the plants and animals that live there.

The River's End Stretch

Near the end of its journey, the Tordera River has a wide, sandy riverbed. The amount of water here changes a lot depending on the season. Sometimes there's a lot of water, and sometimes less.

Right where the river meets the sea, there's a special area called a delta. Here, you can find a lagoon with a mix of fresh and salty water. This area is very important for birds that travel long distances, as they stop here to rest and feed.

A Moment in History

In January 1939, during a difficult time in Spain's history, some soldiers tried to create a defensive line along the Tordera River. They hoped to stop a large opposing force.

The soldiers positioned themselves along the river on January 27. However, the situation was very challenging. The soldiers were young and didn't have much experience or equipment. Because of this, it was very hard for them to hold their position.

The opposing forces were very strong and kept moving forward. The soldiers eventually had to leave the river and move to another town. This shows how the river played a role in a historical attempt to defend the area.
