History of Torre
Becoming a U.S. Territory
After the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of a peace agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became an "unincorporated territory" of the U.S. This means it is part of the U.S. but does not have the same status as a state.
Early Population Count
In 1899, the United States Department of War took a count of all the people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. They found that Torre and a nearby barrio called Susúa had a combined population of 1,755 people.
