About Torstein Horgmo
Torstein grew up in Trondheim, Norway. Later, he moved to Oslo. He started snowboarding when he was twelve years old. Before that, he only skied.
Torstein has many sponsors, including DC Shoes, Oakley, Inc., DNB ASA, and GoPro. These companies help him with gear and support his career.
In 2012, Torstein released his own film called "Horgasm – A Love Story." This movie showed his snowboarding journey over two years. He also started a company called AWSM brand with another snowboarder, Andreas Wiig.
You might have seen Torstein riding with Mark McMorris. They often appear together on a YouTube channel called "ShredBots." Torstein started this channel with Mark McMorris and Eero Ettala.
Torstein's Snowboarding Competitions
Torstein Horgmo has won many big competitions. In 2008, he won a gold medal in Snowboard Big Air at the Winter X Games XII in Aspen. He beat famous riders like Travis Rice and Kevin Pearce.
In 2009, he won gold in the slopestyle final at the Winter Dew Tour. He even beat Shaun White in that event!
At the 2009 Winter X Games XIII, Torstein competed in Big Air again. He lost to his friend and teammate, Travis Rice. For this event, they tried a new way of judging: text-voting by the audience. Many riders, including Travis Rice, felt this system wasn't fair. They thought popularity or nationality might matter more than how difficult a trick was. Torstein did some amazing tricks, but Travis won.
In the 2009-2010 Dew Tour winter season, Torstein won two first-place victories in slopestyle, again beating Shaun White.
Landing the Triple Cork
In the summer of 2010, Torstein made history. He was the first person to land a "triple cork" off a huge 100-foot jump! A triple cork is a super difficult trick. It involves three off-axis flips and four full rotations in the air before landing. He did this in Folgefonna, Norway.
Then, in January 2011, Torstein landed the triple cork in a competition. He did it in the Big Air finals at the Winter X Games XV. This incredible trick helped him win a gold medal over Sebastien Toutant.
He did it again in January 2012 at the Winter X Games Big Air Final. He landed a "true triple cork 1440" and got a perfect score of 50 out of 50! This time, it was a backside spin triple. He finished second, just behind Mark McMorris.
At the Winter X Games Aspen in January 2013, Torstein made history once more. He was the first person to land a "switch backside triple cork 1440" in a competition. He earned another perfect score of 50/50 and won the gold medal in Big Air.
Later that year, he won gold in slopestyle at the Burton European Open and silver at the US Open. At the Burton US Open, Torstein was the only rider to land a triple cork on the slopestyle course. He narrowly lost to his Shredbots teammate, Mark McMorris.
Torstein was set to compete in the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. Sadly, he had an accident during practice and broke his collarbone. This injury meant he couldn't compete in the Olympics.
