Toru Oniki (鬼木 達, Oniki Tōru, born April 20, 1974) is a Japanese football manager and former player. He is currently the manager of the J1 League club, Kashima Antlers.

Toru Oniki's Playing Career

Toru Oniki was born in Funabashi, Japan, on April 20, 1974. After finishing high school, he joined the football club Kashima Antlers in 1993. He played as a defensive midfielder, which means he helped protect his team's goal. However, he found it hard to become a regular player because of other strong players like Jorginho and Yasuto Honda.

In 1998, Oniki moved to Kawasaki Frontale on loan. This club was in the Japan Football League at the time. He played regularly there and helped the team finish in second place. In 1999, he went back to Kashima Antlers but did not play many games.

In 2000, he joined Kawasaki Frontale again. This time, the club had been promoted to the J1 League, Japan's top football league. He played in many matches and helped the club reach second place in the 2000 J.League Cup. Even though Kawasaki Frontale finished last in the league that year and was moved down to the J2 League, Oniki became a regular player from 2001.

From 2003, he played less often. However, his team, Kawasaki Frontale, won the championship in 2004 and was promoted back to the J1 League. Oniki played very little in 2005 and decided to retire from playing football at the end of the 2006 season.

Toru Oniki's Managerial Career

After he stopped playing, Toru Oniki started coaching for Kawasaki Frontale in 2007. He worked as a coach for the main team until 2016. In 2017, he became the manager of the club.

As manager, Oniki led Kawasaki Frontale to many victories. His team won the J1 League championship four times: in 2017, 2018, 2020, and 2021. They also won the Emperor's Cup twice (2020 and 2023) and the J.League Cup in 2019. Under his leadership, they also secured the Japanese Super Cup in 2019, 2021, and 2024.

Oniki announced that he would leave Kawasaki Frontale at the end of the 2024 season when his contract ended. He then became the new manager of his old club, the Kashima Antlers, starting from the 2025 season.
