Exploring Toshinori Kondo's Music Journey

Toshinori Kondo was born in Ehime Prefecture, Japan. He started his journey in music at Kyoto University in 1967. There, he became good friends with a percussionist named Tsuchitori Toshiyuki.

In 1972, both Kondo and Toshiyuki left the university. Toshiyuki went on to work with Peter Brook, a famous theater director. Kondo joined a band led by Yosuke Yamashita.

Moving to New York and Collaborations

In 1978, Kondo moved to New York City. This was a big step for his music career. He started playing with many well-known musicians. These included Bill Laswell, John Zorn, Fred Frith, and Eraldo Bernocchi.

A year later, he released his first music recording. He also toured around Europe with Eugene Chadbourne. During this time, he worked with other European musicians, like Peter Brötzmann.

Returning to Japan and New Sounds

After his time in New York and Europe, Kondo returned to Japan. He continued to work with famous artists. Some of these were Ryuichi Sakamoto, Kazumi Watanabe, and Herbie Hancock.

In the mid-1980s, Kondo began to focus more on his own music. He started mixing his experimental jazz style with electronic music. This created a new and exciting sound.

In the 1990s, he was part of a music group called Die Like a Dog. Their first album, Fragments Of Music, Life And Death of Albert Ayler, came out in 1994.

Music for Peace and Later Works

In 2002, Toshinori Kondo helped organize an international peace festival in Hiroshima. He was asked to do this by the Dalai Lama, a spiritual leader.

Kondo was also a member of the band Praxis. In 2007, he worked with Bill Laswell again to create the album Inamorata.

Founding Kondo IMA and "Blow the Earth"

In 1984, Kondo started his own band called Kondo IMA. This band became quite popular. However, Kondo later moved to Amsterdam. He wanted to be alone and start a new project called "Blow the Earth" in 1993.

The "Blow the Earth" project later came to Japan. It ran from the summer of 2007 until the autumn of 2011. Kondo even directed a film about this project called Blow the Earth in Japan. This was his first time directing a movie.
