Totland Bay is a beautiful bay located on the west coast of the Isle of Wight, England. It's about a quarter of a mile (0.4 km) west of the village of Totland, which is how the bay got its name.

The bay faces north-west and has a shoreline that stretches for about 2.5 miles (4 km). It features a beach, a strong concrete seawall, and structures called groynes. Groynes are low walls built out into the sea to stop sand and shingle from being washed away. There's also a long Victorian pier, which is currently being fixed up. The bay extends from Warden Point in the north down to Hatherwood Point in the south-west.

Totland Bay Beach and Pier

The bottom of the bay is a mix of mud and sand. There aren't many rocks sticking up from the seabed. This makes Totland Bay a good spot for boats to drop anchor safely.

The beach itself is mostly made of shingle, which means it's covered in small, smooth stones rather than fine sand. Since 2001, the beach has been recognized for its excellent quality. It has won the Seaside Award Flag, which means it's clean and safe. During the summer, any trash or seaweed is cleaned up daily. The seaweed is even used by local farmers to make compost for their crops.

The pier at Totland Bay is quite old, dating back to the Victorian times. It used to have a cafe, and exciting plans are underway to fix it up and reopen the cafe for visitors to enjoy once more.

Exploring the Bay

You can get the best views of Totland Bay from Headon Warren, which is a high piece of land nearby. Another great place to see the bay is from the concrete seawall that runs along the coast.

The Isle of Wight Coastal Path is a walking trail that follows the seawall. You can walk along this path from Warden Point all the way to Widdick Chine, enjoying the sea views as you go.

Local Area

A school called Weston Academy used to be located in the Totland Bay area. It closed down in 2015.
