Totten Key is an island located in the upper Florida Keys. It is part of Biscayne National Park and can be found in Miami-Dade County, Florida. This island is situated in the southern part of Biscayne Bay, just west of Old Rhodes Key.
History of Totten Key
This island was likely named after General Joseph Gilbert Totten. He was a very important leader in the U.S. Army, known as the Chief of Engineers. In 1848, General Totten was in charge of a special project. He led a team to map out the coast of Florida, focusing on the area around Biscayne Bay.
Another famous officer, Robert E. Lee, worked under General Totten during this survey. An old government map from 1858, called "U.S. Coast Survey chart #68," clearly shows the island listed as "Totten's Key."
