What is the Towerrining Lake Area Like?
This special area includes Towerrinning Lake, which is about 160 hectares big. The lake is a "brackish" lake, meaning its water is a bit salty, not completely fresh. It has also been changed quite a bit over time. Next to it are salty swamps, sometimes called Moodiarrup Swamp NW.
The area also includes the Towerrining Nature Reserve. The lake gets its water from the swamp, from rain, and from small local streams. The lake has open water with a border of paperbark trees.
Fun Activities and Challenges
When the water levels are good, people enjoy waterskiing here. There's also a caravan park, a campsite, and picnic spots right next to the wetlands.
The swamp sometimes has open water with scattered shrubs and dead trees when it's flooded. Both the lake and swamps have faced challenges. Water levels have risen, and the water has become saltier. Even with these changes, the wetlands are still very important for many waterbirds.
The weather in this region is like a Mediterranean climate. This means it has cool, wet winters and warm, dry summers.
Why is This Area Important for Birds?
This site is known as an Important Bird Area (IBA) by BirdLife International. This means it's a super important place for birds around the world! It's special because it regularly supports more than 1% of all the blue-billed ducks in the world. That's a lot of ducks!
Other Birds You Might See
Many other waterbirds have been seen here in large numbers too. These include Australian shelducks, grey teals, and hoary-headed grebes. It's a great spot for birdwatching!
