Why is it called Townsend Lake?

Townsend Lake got its name from a person named Townsend Carpenter Beardslee. He was born in 1832 and passed away in 1863. Townsend was special because he was the very first child born in Independence Township whose family had settled there. His father, John W. Beardslee, was actually the first settler in the township.
