Trabolgan is a fun holiday village in County Cork, Republic of Ireland. It's a place where families can stay in self-catering homes. The village is built on a huge 140-acre (0.57 km2) area that used to be a large country estate. Trabolgan was officially opened on 14 June 1985 by Matt McNulty, who was in charge of Irish tourism at the time.
History
Pontin's Trabolgan
Trabolgan first opened its doors in 1948. It was started by a British holiday camp company called Pontin's. Pontin's built more than 100 small houses called chalets. They also added a dance hall and an outdoor swimming pool. At first, many British holidaymakers came to visit.
Scoil na nÓg
However, Trabolgan did not stay successful as a holiday camp. So, from 1959 to 1973, it became a boys' boarding school. The school was called Scoil na nÓg and was run by a group called Gaedhealachas Teo.
Trabolgan Holiday Village
In 1975, a pension fund from the Netherlands bought the Trabolgan estate. In 1980, they opened a small holiday area. It had 30 houses, a bar, and a clubhouse. This new area mostly welcomed visitors from other parts of Europe.
In 1983, a big decision was made to make the village much larger. They planned to add a main building and many more fun facilities. The building work was finished in 1985. In 2000, the site was put up for sale. Then, in 2002, Trevor Hemmings bought it.
