Tracie Thoms is an American actress and singer. She is well-known for her roles in popular movies and TV shows. Some of her most famous parts include the movie Rent, the TV series Cold Case, and the film The Devil Wears Prada. Since 2018, she has also been a regular on the TV drama 9-1-1.

Early Life and Learning
Tracie Thoms was born and grew up in Baltimore, Maryland. Her father, Donald H. Thoms, worked as a TV director and a Vice President of Programming at PBS. Her mother is Mariana Davis. Tracie also has a younger brother named Austin.
She started learning acting when she was just 10 years old. Later, she went to the Baltimore School for the Arts to continue her studies.
In 1997, Tracie earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Howard University. After that, she attended the Drama Division at the Juilliard School from 1997 to 2001. Famous actors like Lee Pace and Anthony Mackie were also in her class at Juilliard.
Her Acting Career
Tracie Thoms has had many interesting roles in her career. She played Mahandra McGinty in the TV show Wonderfalls. She was also Sasha in the American version of the TV series As If.
In 2005, she joined the cast of the CBS crime drama Cold Case. In this show, she played Kat Miller, a detective who solves old, unsolved crimes. Tracie also made guest appearances on other popular shows like Law & Order and The Shield.
Movies and Musicals
Tracie has appeared in several movies. One of her most notable roles was in the film version of the Broadway musical Rent. She played Joanne Jefferson, a lawyer and the girlfriend of Maureen Johnson (Idina Menzel). Before getting this role, Tracie was already a big fan of the Rent musical.
She also appeared in the 2006 film The Devil Wears Prada, playing a character named Lily. In 2007, Tracie was in Quentin Tarantino's movie Death Proof, alongside actresses like Zoë Bell and Rosario Dawson.
In 2014, Tracie had a role in the movie Annie. She played Annie's "fake mother," a character inspired by Lily St. Regis from the original musical.
On Stage: Broadway and Beyond
Tracie made her first appearance on Broadway in a play called Drowning Crow. She also performed in many other plays off-Broadway and in regional theaters.
In 2008, she returned to the cast of Rent on Broadway, once again playing Joanne. The very last performance of this Broadway show was even filmed and released on DVD as Rent: Filmed Live on Broadway. She played Joanne again in a special production of Rent at the Hollywood Bowl in 2010, which was directed by Neil Patrick Harris.
In 2016, Tracie appeared in the Broadway revival of Falsettos. In this musical, she played the character of Dr. Charlotte.
Recent TV Roles
Since 2018, Tracie Thoms has been a recurring character on the TV drama 9-1-1. She plays Karen Wilson, a character connected to the show's main firefighters and police officers. She also had a main role in the TV series Truth Be Told from 2019 to 2023.
Awards
In 2016, Tracie Thoms was nominated for an Emmy Award. This nomination was in the "Outstanding Actress in a Short Form Comedy or Drama Series" category for her work in "Send Me: An Original Web Series" which was available on BET.com.
