A Look Back at Trafton's Past
Before European settlers arrived, the Stillaguamish lived in this area. They built a large winter village right by the river, near where Trafton is today. This village was called chuck-kol-che. We only know the early way this native Lushootseed name was written down.
At least 200 people lived in the chuck-kol-che village. They had permanent buildings, including a big longhouse, a smaller house, and a smokehouse. One of the leaders, or "chiefs," of the village was named chad-is.
