Tralee is a new suburb being built near Queanbeyan, New South Wales. It is located south of Jerrabomberra. It is also near where a future city called Environa was once planned. The suburb was named after a town called Tralee in Ireland.
Building Tralee
Tralee is a "planned suburb." This means it is being carefully designed and built from scratch. The idea is to create a new community with homes and facilities.
Challenges with Building
The land chosen for Tralee is under the flight path of Canberra Airport. This means planes fly low over the area when taking off or landing. Airport officials were worried about building so many homes there. They thought it might cause problems for the airport.
However, in 2008, the New South Wales State Planning Minister, Kristina Keneally, approved the plan. This plan allowed for about 5,000 new homes to be built. Later, in November 2012, the New South Wales Government officially approved the land for building.
Even after the approval, the airport, some federal politicians, and the ACT Government continued to express their concerns. They wanted to make sure that building homes so close to the airport would be safe and not cause issues.
Where is Tralee?
Tralee is located on the lower parts of a place called Pemberton Hill. This hill is to the south of the suburb. The area is about 600 to 620 metres (about 1,968 to 2,034 feet) above sea level.
Rocks and History
The ground in Tralee is made of special rocks. These rocks are called acid volcanics, like rhyodacite and rhyolite. They come from the Deakin Volcanics. These rocks formed a very long time ago, about 414 million years ago!
