Royalla is a rural area located right on the edge of New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory. It got its name from a nearby mountain called Mount Rob Roy.

This place was once a small settlement for railway workers. It was first known as Rob Roy. In 1905, its name was officially changed to Royalla. Today, Royalla is a large rural area. It lies to the east of the Monaro Highway. The border with the ACT follows the old railway line's path. Royalla had a railway station until 1975. In 2016, about 984 people lived in the New South Wales part of Royalla.

A part of Royalla is also located within the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). This ACT section of Royalla is grouped with other rural areas. The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) calls this larger area "Tuggeranong (SA2)". It includes parts of Williamsdale. It also covers all the rural land between the Murrumbidgee River and the NSW border. In 2021, the ACT part of Royalla had a population of 43 people.

On September 3, 2014, a big solar farm was opened in Royalla. At that time, it was the largest solar farm in Australia. Important people attended the opening. These included Simon Corbell, who was the ACT's Minister for the Environment. Also present was Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo, Spain's Minister of Foreign Affairs.

The solar farm has 83,000 solar panels. It can produce 20 megawatts of power. This is enough electricity to power more than 4,500 homes in the ACT. A company from Spain called Fotowatio Renewable Ventures (FRV) built this farm.
