Early Life and Learning
Hung was born in Da Nang, a city in South Vietnam. When he was 12, his family moved to France in 1975. This was after the Vietnam War ended.
He first studied philosophy at a university in France. But then he watched a film called A Man Escaped by Robert Bresson. This movie changed his mind. He decided he wanted to study film instead. He then went to the National School Supérieure Louis-Lumière. This school teaches people how to be cinematographers, who are experts in movie photography. To support himself, he worked in a bookshop at the Musée d'Orsay museum.
His Amazing Film Career
Trần Anh Hùng is one of the most important Vietnamese filmmakers. His movies have become famous around the world. His first three films were all about life in his home country, Vietnam.
His first big movie was The Scent of Green Papaya (1993). It was even nominated for an Oscar! This film also won two top awards at the Cannes Film Festival. His next movie, Cyclo (1995), won the Golden Lion award. This is a very important prize from the Venice International Film Festival. The Vertical Ray of the Sun, released in 2000, was the third film in his "Vietnam trilogy."
After taking a break, Hung made a thriller movie called I Come with the Rain (2009). It had famous actors like Josh Hartnett. He also directed Norwegian Wood (2010). This movie was based on a popular novel by Haruki Murakami.
Movies About Vietnam
In France, Hung went to the special film school, Louis Lumière. For his final project in 1987, he made a short film. It was called La femme mariée de Nam Xuong. This film was inspired by an old Vietnamese folk tale.
After that, he made another short film in 1989. Then came his first feature film, The Scent of Green Papaya (1993). People loved The Scent of Green Papaya for its beautiful style. It showed lovely pictures of Vietnamese life. This film is the only Vietnamese movie ever nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
Because Papaya was so successful, Hung got money to make his next film, Cyclo. This movie tells stories about poor people in Saigon (now called Ho Chi Minh City). It was filmed right there in the city. Cyclo won the Golden Lion at the 52nd Venice International Film Festival. At only 33 years old, Hung was one of the youngest directors to win this award.
After showing life in Ho Chi Minh City, Hung focused on Hanoi in The Vertical Ray of the Sun (2000). The movie is about three sisters who look up to their parents' perfect family life. But then they discover the truth after their mother passes away.
His Unique Film Style
Hung makes films to show Vietnam in a new way. He wants to rebuild the image of Vietnam he remembered from before moving to France. His movies offer a different view of Vietnam. This is important because French and American films often showed Vietnam in a certain way. Hung's stories come from his knowledge of Vietnamese culture. They also come from his own trips to Vietnam.
Hung is greatly inspired by French cinema. He also likes the work of some European and Japanese filmmakers. These include Bergman, Bresson, Kurosawa, Tarkovsky, and Ozu.
Hung believes that "Art is the truth wearing a mask." He likes to tell stories in new ways. He wants to challenge how audiences feel. He wants them to enjoy films with their emotions, not just by thinking critically.
As a leading Vietnamese director, Hung has changed how Vietnam is seen in movies. He uses his camera to show a Vietnam where kindness and harshness exist together. His famous "trilogy" of films—The Scent of Green Papaya (1993), Cyclo (1995), and The Vertical Ray of the Sun (2000)—shows his deep feelings for his home country.
