Travis Sentell "Gookie" Dawkins was born on May 12, 1979. He is an American former professional baseball player. He played as a shortstop and is now a coach. Travis played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Cincinnati Reds and Kansas City Royals.
Playing Baseball
Travis Dawkins was chosen by the Cincinnati Reds in 1997. This was part of the Major League Baseball Draft. He made his first big league appearance with the Reds on September 3, 1999.
His very first time batting in a major league game was on September 4, 1999. This game was in Philadelphia. It was a special game because the Reds hit nine home runs! Travis hit a single, which means he got a base hit. He then reached third base because of a throwing error by the other team. A young fan grabbed the ball during the play. The Reds team later got the ball back for Travis.
Olympic Gold Medal
Travis Dawkins won an Olympic gold medal in 2000. He was playing for the United States baseball team. This was a big achievement for him and his country.
Playing for Different Teams
In 2007, Travis played for the Tacoma Rainiers. This team is a Triple-A affiliate of the Seattle Mariners. He also played for the Ottawa Lynx, a Triple-A team for the Philadelphia Phillies.
He signed with the Chicago White Sox for the 2008 season. He was sent to their Triple-A team, the Charlotte Knights. Later that year, on June 11, 2008, he was traded to the Kansas City Royals. After that season, he signed with the White Sox again. He then signed with the Reds in the summer of 2010.
Coaching Career
Travis Dawkins started his professional coaching career in 2015. He worked as a hitting coach for the Arizona League Reds. This team is based in Goodyear, Arizona.
In 2016, he became the hitting coach for the Cincinnati Reds' Advanced-A team, the Daytona Tortugas. The next year, in 2017, he was promoted. He became the hitting coach for the Reds' Double-A team, the Pensacola Blue Wahoos.
In 2018, Travis was promoted again. He became the manager for the Reds' Rookie-level team, the Greeneville Reds. In 2020, he moved up to manage the Reds' Single-A team, the Dayton Dragons.
