Trent Robinson grew up in Camden, a suburb near Sydney, Australia. He went to St Gregory's College, Campbelltown, where he was a good student and played rugby league.
Playing Career Highlights
Robinson started his rugby league journey playing for the Sydney Roosters' junior teams. He was a promising player who played in the front row or as a lock.
He played a few games for the Wests Tigers between 2000 and 2001. He was the very first player to make his first-grade debut for the Wests Tigers without having played for another top team first. In 2002, he played one game for the Parramatta Eels.
In 2005, he moved to Europe and played for Toulouse Olympique. Soon after, at just 28 years old, he became the head coach for the team.
Coaching Journey
Coaching Toulouse Olympique
After playing for Toulouse Olympique, Robinson became their coach in 2005. He was only 28 years old at the time.
Under his coaching, Toulouse Olympique became the first French team to reach the semi-finals of the Challenge Cup, which is a big achievement in rugby league.
Assistant Coach Roles
Robinson worked as an assistant coach for the Newcastle Knights for three seasons, from 2007 to 2009. After that, he joined the Sydney Roosters in 2010 as an assistant coach for their NRL team.
He was in charge of the Roosters' defense. The team had finished last in 2009, but with Robinson's help, they made an amazing comeback and reached the NRL Grand Final in 2010.
Leading the Catalans Dragons
After his time as an assistant, Robinson became the head coach of the Catalans Dragons in France. He coached them from 2011 to the end of 2012.
In his first year with the Dragons, he helped the team climb from last place to sixth. He was even named the 'Super League Coach of the Year' for his great work. His team also reached the Preliminary Finals two years in a row.
Head Coach of the Sydney Roosters
Robinson is now the longest-serving head coach in the 116-year history of the Sydney Roosters. He has led his team to the finals in almost every season since he started.
He became the head coach of the Sydney Roosters in 2013. In his very first season as an NRL head coach, he led the Roosters to win the Premiership! He was only the second rookie NRL coach to win a Minor Premiership and the youngest ever to win the Dally M Award for Coach of the Year.
He finished this amazing season by leading the Roosters to their 13th Premiership title. He was only the sixth rookie coach to win a Premiership. At the end of 2013, he also received the Rugby League International Federation’s Coach of the Year award.
In early 2014, the Sydney Roosters also won the World Club Challenge, beating the Wigan Warriors. The Roosters continued their success under Robinson, winning Minor Premierships and Club Championships in 2014 and 2015. In 2015, they became the first team in the modern era to win three Minor Premierships in a row.
In 2018, Robinson's Sydney Roosters won their 14th Premiership. This Grand Final win was called a "coaching masterclass." In 2019, he led the Roosters to their 15th Premiership, making them the first team to win back-to-back Premierships in the unified competition since 1992-93.
The Roosters started their 2020 season by winning the World Club Challenge for the second year in a row. During the 2020 season, which was affected by the coronavirus, Robinson was part of a special group that helped make sure the competition could start again. Even with many injuries, the Roosters finished fifth in 2021, and Robinson was a finalist for the Dally M Coach of the Year award.
In 2022, Robinson made history by becoming the first person to coach 250 first-grade games for the Roosters. He was again a finalist for the Dally M Coach of the Year. His team had an impressive eight-match winning streak to finish the regular season.
In 2023, the Roosters had a strong finish to the season, winning five games in a row to make the finals. They won a thrilling elimination final against Cronulla. In 2024, Robinson guided the team to a third-place finish on the ladder, reaching the preliminary final stage.
