Kelvin Trent Tucker, born on December 20, 1959, is a former American professional basketball player. He played for eleven seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA).

Trent Tucker was a shooting guard who stood 6 feet 5 inches tall. He played college basketball at the University of Minnesota from 1978 to 1982. In his final year, he helped his team win the Big Ten Conference championship. After college, the New York Knicks chose him as the 6th player overall in the 1982 NBA draft.

On November 30, 1982, Trent Tucker made his NBA debut. He scored 17 points in the third quarter against the Utah Jazz. He was one of the first players known for shooting many three-point shots. In 1986, he took part in the first-ever Three-point Shootout. He reached the semifinals before Larry Bird won the event.

Trent Tucker played nine seasons with the Knicks. Then, he joined the San Antonio Spurs in 1991 for one season. After that, he moved to the Chicago Bulls. With the Bulls, he won the 1993 NBA Championship. He retired after that season. During his career, he scored 6,237 points and made 1,532 assists.

Trent Tucker's Life Off the Court

Trent Tucker is married to Malina Anderson. They have two children, William and James. James is a talented hockey player for his age. He was accepted into Shattuck-St. Mary’s, a well-known high school with a strong hockey program. Both William and James play hockey. The family lives in Eden Prairie, Minnesota.

The "Trent Tucker Rule"

Trent Tucker is famous for a special rule in basketball named after him. This rule came about on January 15, 1990. In a game between the New York Knicks and the Chicago Bulls, only 0.1 seconds were left on the clock. Tucker quickly shot a three-pointer just before the buzzer, and it went in! The shot counted, and the Knicks won the game.

The Bulls' coach, Phil Jackson, argued that it was impossible to catch the ball and shoot it in just 0.1 seconds. Even though the Bulls' protest did not change the game's outcome, the NBA later added a new rule. This rule states that a player needs at least 0.3 seconds on the clock to take a regular shot. If there is less than 0.3 seconds, only a tip-in (gently tapping the ball into the basket) or a high lob (throwing the ball high towards the basket) can count.

After His Basketball Career

After retiring from playing basketball, Trent Tucker worked as a broadcast analyst. He helped explain Minnesota Timberwolves basketball games on TV. He now works for KFAN radio.

Trent Tucker has also been very active in helping others. He started the Trent Tucker Non-Profit Organization in 1998. On April 15, 2013, he became the Director of District Athletics for the Minneapolis Public School District in Minnesota. He held this position until February 9, 2018. He resigned because he had different ideas from the new leaders in the district.
