Trevélez is a small village located in the province of Granada, Spain. It's nestled in the western part of the Alpujarras region. In 2011, about 823 people lived there. The Trevélez River flows right through the village.
Trevélez is special because it's very high up in the mountains. Two of Spain's tallest mountains, Mulhacén and Alcazaba, are just a short walk north of the village.

Village Location and Altitude
Trevélez sits at an elevation of 1486 meters (about 4,875 feet) above sea level. While it's very high, it's not the highest village in Spain. That title goes to Valdelinares. Trevélez is located where the Trevélez River meets a smaller stream. It's southwest of Mulhacén, which is the highest peak in the Sierra Nevada mountain range.
Parts of Trevélez
The village of Trevélez is divided into three main parts:
- Barrio Bajo (Lower Quarter)
- Barrio Medio (Middle Quarter)
- Barrio Alto (Upper Quarter)
There's a difference of about 200 meters (656 feet) in height between the lowest and highest parts of the village! The only bridge over the river is in the Barrio Bajo. The Barrio Bajo is a popular spot for tourists. The Barrio Medio and Barrio Alto look more like traditional Alpujarran villages. Even so, tourism is important for the whole village's economy.
Getting Around Trevélez
To the west of Trevélez, you'll find the village of Busquístar. The main road that goes through the Barrio Bajo continues east and south to Juviles and Torvizcón. There's a regular bus service on this road. It connects Trevélez to bigger towns like Lanjarón and Órgiva, and even to the city of Granada.
Famous Ham of Trevélez
Trevélez is very well-known for its delicious air-cured hams. Making ham this way is a specialty all over the Alpujarras region. However, it's especially famous in Trevélez. This is because the village's high altitude creates a very dry climate. These conditions are perfect for curing and storing hams, giving them their special flavor.
Local Celebrations
Trevélez celebrates the day of the Virgen de Las Nieves (which means Virgin of the Snows) during the summer months. On this special day, a statue of the Virgin Mary is carried all the way to the top of Mulhacén mountain. A special church service is held there. People traditionally believe that this celebration helps keep travelers safe in the Sierra Nevada mountains for another year.
