Trigg, also known as Triggshire, was an important area in Cornwall, England, a long time ago. It was one of ten "hundreds" in Cornwall. A hundred was like an old-fashioned district or region used for managing the land and collecting taxes. You can learn more about these areas in the article Hundreds of Cornwall.

Trigg is a very old name, first mentioned in the 600s. Back then, it was called "Pagus Tricurius," which meant "land of three war hosts." It was located in the northern part of Cornwall. This area included places like Bodmin Moor, the town of Bodmin, and the land to the west and north of the Moor.

Archaeologists have found a lot of pottery from other countries at Tintagel Castle, which is in this area. This suggests that Trigg was a very important place. Perhaps groups of warriors or leaders from the region gathered here a long time ago.

What's in a Name?

The name Trigg might be connected to "Trégor" (Bro-Dreger), a place in Brittany, which is now in northwest France. It's interesting how names can be similar across different lands!

The name Trigg is also used for two church areas called "deaneries": Trigg Major and Trigg Minor. These church areas cover a wider space than the original Triggshire. Since 1874, they have been part of the Archdeaconry of Bodmin. Then, in 1876, they became part of the Diocese of Truro, which is the main church region for Cornwall.

Towns and Villages of Triggshire

The parishes (which are like small towns or villages with their surrounding areas) that made up Triggshire were:

Trigg Today

The name Triggshire is still used by different groups and clubs in the area. It helps keep the history of the region alive!

Triggshire Music Groups

The Triggshire Wind Orchestra is a group for wind instrument players. Most of its members come from Sir James Smith's School, Wadebridge School, and Budehaven School. Some students from Bodmin College and Launceston College also join. Janet Elston started the orchestra in 1984 and still leads them today.

Because the wind orchestra was so successful, the Triggshire String Orchestra was also created. This group is for students who play string instruments from the same schools.

Trigg Morris Dancers

Trigg Morris is a long-standing club that performs Morris Dancing. Morris dancing is a traditional English folk dance, often done with bells on costumes and sticks or handkerchiefs.

Sir John Maclean (1811-1895) was a historian who grew up in Trehudreth, a place in Blisland. He wrote a very detailed book called "Parochial History of the Deanery of Trigg Minor." This book, published between 1872 and 1879, came out in three volumes. It is one of the most thorough history books about any part of Cornwall. At the time he wrote it, the deanery he studied included 20 parishes.

Interestingly, John Maclean's original name was John Lean. He changed it to Maclean because he believed he had Maclean ancestors. This change happened partly because another person named Lean was involved in a local incident near Bodmin Moor. There are old family stories about how some Lean families in Devon and Cornwall came from two Maclean brothers. These brothers were supposedly sent away from western Scotland to a farm near Bodmin. They married two sisters and lived close to Blisland.
