Triquet Island: A Place of Ancient Secrets
Triquet Island might look like a regular island, but it holds a very important secret about early human history in North America!
An Amazing Discovery
In 2017, a team of archaeologists from the University of Victoria made an incredible discovery on Triquet Island. They found the remains of an ancient village! This finding is super exciting because it seems to prove what the local Heiltsuk First Nation people have said for a very long time in their oral histories.
A Safe Place During the Ice Age
The Heiltsuk Nation's stories talk about how their ancestors found safe places on islands along the Pacific Coast during the last ice age. This was a time when huge sheets of ice covered much of North America. The discovery on Triquet Island suggests that these islands were indeed safe havens for people during that very cold period.
How Old Is It?
The archaeologists found a hearth, which is like an old fireplace, at the site. They used a special method called radiocarbon dating to figure out its age. This method measures how much carbon has decayed in something to tell how old it is. The hearth was found to be between 13,613 and 14,086 years old! This makes the Triquet Island village one of the oldest known settlements in all of North America. It tells us that people were living here much earlier than many scientists previously thought.
