Troy, Oregon facts for kids
Troy is a small, quiet community in Wallowa County, Oregon, United States. It's not a city with its own government, but rather an unincorporated community, meaning it's part of the county. Troy is special because it's located right where two rivers, the Grande Ronde River and the Wenaha River, join together. You can find Troy west of Flora, close to the Washington state border.
Troy is famous for its amazing steelhead fishing. Many people visit just for this! The community offers places to stay, like an RV park, two fishing lodges, and several vacation rentals (Airbnbs). There's also a resort and a restaurant. The only other public service in Troy is an elementary school.
How Troy Started
Troy began to form in the late 1890s. The first people to settle there were Mormon families. They named their settlement Nauvoo, after a more famous Mormon town in Illinois.
A post office, which helps send and receive mail, opened in Troy in 1902. By 1910, the area was officially planned out as a town, which is called being "platted." In 1931, the town's name was officially changed to Troy. People believe it was named after Troy Grinstead, who was a son of one of the original Mormon settlers in the area. It's possible that a ferry (a boat that carries people and vehicles across a river) was already operating on the Grande Ronde River at this location, helping people get around.
Troy has always been a place that served the nearby farms and ranches. It was also known as a "fisherman's getaway paradise" because it was quite isolated and didn't have many big businesses. This made it a peaceful spot for visitors.
Troy Today
In the 1960s, many people started moving from small towns to bigger cities. This trend is sometimes called "urban drift." Because of this, Troy's population slowly became smaller. Services that people could also find in nearby Flora began to close down.
The post office in Troy closed in 1965. This change made Troy what it is today: mainly a place for fishing, hunting, and vacations. There are only about 25 people who live there permanently now. It remains a quiet, natural spot for those looking to enjoy the outdoors.
