History of Trujillo's Growth
Years ago, the city of Trujillo was surrounded by a wall. This wall separated it from other towns. Today, Trujillo has grown far beyond that old wall. Only small parts of the wall remain for history.
Trujillo has always been important to nearby cities. These cities have grown together with Trujillo over time. Now, if you look at an aerial photo, it's hard to see where Trujillo ends and the other towns begin. They have become one big urban area.
How Metropolitan Areas Are Planned
In Peru, local city governments plan their metropolitan areas. They have special authority to do this. They also get help from expert urban planning offices.
Official information about these metropolitan areas comes from these city governments. This is because local governments can make their own decisions about politics, money, and how they are run. One of their jobs is to approve plans for city development.
Size and Structure
The Trujillo Metropolitan Area covers about 110,000 hectares. This area includes the lower Moche Valley, also known as Valle de Santa Catalina. It also stretches to the Chicama valley in the north and the Viru Valley in the south. A big project called Chavimochic helps with irrigation in this area.
Population of Trujillo's Districts
According to PLANDET, which is an agency of the city's government, Metropolitan Trujillo has a main urban area. This area is called the Trujillo Urban Continuum. It includes the districts of Trujillo, El Porvenir, Florencia de Mora, La Esperanza, and Víctor Larco Herrera. It also includes the El Milagro area of Huanchaco District.
The metropolitan area also includes all the towns and farms in the Santa Catalina valley. This is the Moche river basin. These areas include the districts of Huanchaco, Laredo, Moche, and Salaverry. All these districts are planned as one big unit.
