Have you ever wondered how big a city really is? Sometimes, a city isn't just one place, but a huge area made up of a main city and many smaller towns around it. This is called a metropolitan area. It's like a big family of cities and towns that are all connected.
In Peru, a metropolitan area is a large city and its nearby towns. These areas have lots of people living in them. If a Peruvian city has more than 500,000 people and a special plan for how it will grow, it's called a metropolis. As of 2007, the biggest metropolitan areas in Peru are Lima, Arequipa, and Trujillo.

What Makes Up These Areas?
A metropolitan area is made of different parts called districts. Think of districts as smaller neighborhoods or towns that belong to the bigger city area.
Lima Metropolitan Area
The Lima Metropolitan Area is the biggest in Peru. It's made up of 5 main parts. These parts include 43 urban districts from Lima Province and 6 districts from Callao Province. In 2015, about 9.8 million people lived here.
Arequipa Metropolitan Area
The Arequipa metropolitan area is the second largest. It includes the main city of Arequipa and many surrounding districts. In 2016, its total population was about 1.1 million people. Some of its important districts are Paucarpata, Cerro Colorado, and Cayma.
Trujillo Metropolitan Area
The Trujillo metropolitan area is also very important. It had about 962,369 people in 2016. Key districts here include Trujillo, El Porvenir, and La Esperanza.
Chiclayo Metropolitan Area
The Chiclayo metropolitan area had an estimated population of about 810,783 in 2016. It includes the main Chiclayo district along with others like Leonardo Ortiz and La Victoria.
Piura Metropolitan Area
The Piura metropolitan area had about 517,293 people in 2016. Its main districts are Piura, Castilla, and Catacaos.
Iquitos Metropolitan Area
The Iquitos metropolitan area is home to about 471,993 people (2016 estimate). The main districts are Iquitos, Punchana, San Juan Bautista, and Belén.
Cusco Metropolitan Area
The Cusco metropolitan area had an estimated population of 434,654 in 2016. It includes the historic city of Cusco and districts like San Jerónimo, Santiago, Wanchaq, and San Sebastián.
Chimbote Metropolitan Area
