The Moche River is an important river on the northern coast of Peru. It flows into the Pacific Ocean. This river is located in the La Libertad Region. The ancient Moche Valley lies on both sides of this river.
The Moche River flows from east to west. It passes through the Trujillo metropolitan area. Its mouth is in the Pacific Ocean. This is where the river meets the sea. The mouth is between the towns of Moche and Victor Larco. Both towns are part of the Trujillo city area.
Where the Moche River Starts
The Moche River begins high in the mountains. It starts in a place called Laguna Grande. This lake is about 3,988 meters (13,084 feet) above sea level. It is near a village called Quiruvilca.
When it first starts, the river is called Rio Grande. As it flows, it changes names. It becomes the San Lorenzo river and then the Constancia river. When it reaches the town of San Juan, it finally gets its well-known name: the Moche River. This is about 14 kilometers (9 miles) from its starting point. It keeps the name Moche River all the way to the Pacific Ocean.
