Discover Trundle's Past
Trundle is located on what used to be the southern lands of the Wangaibon people.
The Post Office here first opened on May 1, 1889. It was called Trundle Lagoon back then. Later, in 1892, its name was changed to Trundle.
The name 'Trundle' likely comes from a hill-fort in England. This place is about 24 kilometers northeast of Portsmouth. The word 'Trundle' is an old English word meaning 'circle'.
The Trundle Hotel's History
The Trundle Hotel opened its doors on March 17, 1912. It replaced an older building from 1888. The hotel was designed with long hallways. These helped cool air flow through the building. This was a clever way to keep cool before air conditioning!
The building was constructed by A.E.Ware. It cost 5,000 pounds, which is about $10,000 today. The hotel claims to have the second longest hotel balcony in New South Wales. It stretches 68 meters along Forbes Street and 18 meters along Parkes Street. The longest hotel balcony in New South Wales is in Cobar, measuring 91 meters.
Other Important Buildings
The Union Hotel was also built by A.E.Ware in 1912. However, this hotel was later taken down. A.E.Ware also built other important places in Trundle. These included the Trundle School of Arts and the Trundle Picture Palace. Both of these were built in 1914.
Trundle Today
Trundle is famous for having one of the widest main streets in Australia. It is 60 meters wide! The street was made so wide to make it easy for large bullock trains to turn around.
For health needs, Trundle has a multi-purpose health center. This used to be the Trundle hospital.
The town also has a golf course with sand-oil greens. There is a 25-meter swimming pool, tennis courts, and horse-racing facilities. You can also find a sports oval called Berryman Park.
In 2011, Trundle was part of a TV show called Country Town Rescue for the ABC. The show tried to get new people to move to the town. Old farmhouses were rented for just one dollar per week! A TV show about this project was shown on March 27, 2012.
Berry Memorial Church
The Berry Memorial Church was opened on Saturday, March 25, 1939. Mrs. Walter Berry gave the church as a gift. It was built to remember her husband and the Berry family's arrival in 1887. The church was designed by Hedley Norman Carr and built by J. Fullerton. Today, it is part of the Uniting Church of Australia.
Bush Tucker Day Festival
Trundle holds an annual festival called "Bush Tucker Day" every September. During this time, Trundle's small population usually doubles or even triples! The main event is a bush tucker cook-off. Contestants try to make the most delicious food using ingredients found in the Australian bush. A group of judges picks the winner.
Other fun competitions include damper throwing, billy boiling, and dog jumping. There are also many bush stalls where you can look around. Bush music is a big part of the day's celebrations.
Trundle ABBA Festival
In 2012, Trundle started its own special festival, just like the Parkes Elvis Festival. It was the first festival in Australia dedicated to the music group ABBA! The first Trundle ABBA Festival was held in the main street of Trundle. Events took place at the Trundle Memorial Hall, Trundle Hotel, and Trundle Services Club on Forbes Street.
In 2013, the festival won the "Event of the Year" award at the Parkes Shire Australia Day Awards. It was also featured in an ABC documentary called ABBA: Bang A Boomerang.
After a break due to the Covid pandemic, the ABBA festival returned on Saturday, October 14, 2023. The 2024 ABBA Festival was held on October 19, 2024.
