Trương Thị Mai (born January 23, 1958) is a well-known Vietnamese politician. She held important roles in the Communist Party of Vietnam. She was the Permanent Member of the Secretariat and also led the Central Organization Commission. She was the first woman to hold these high positions.
Mai was also a member of the Secretariat and the Politburo. These are the country's top groups for making big decisions. She was ranked very high, making her one of the most influential women in Vietnamese politics.
She has been a part of the Party Central Committee since 2006. Before that, she led the Party's Mass Mobilisation Commission. She was also a member of the National Assembly of Vietnam for a long time, starting in 1997. There, she chaired the Parliamentary Committee for Social Affairs. She also served as President of the Vietnam–Cuba Friendship Association.
Before working in national politics, Mai was the President of the Vietnam Youth Federation. She was the first woman to lead this organization. She also held a key role in the Hồ Chí Minh Communist Youth Union.
She studied history, law, and public administration at university. She also earned an advanced degree in political theory.

Early Life and Education
Trương Thị Mai was born on January 23, 1958, in Quảng Bình Province, Vietnam. When she was young, her family moved to Da Lat, Lâm Đồng. She grew up there and studied History at Dalat University. She earned a Bachelor of History degree.
Later, she attended the National Academy of Public Administration in Hanoi. There, she earned a Bachelor of Laws degree. She continued her studies in Public Administration and received a Master's degree. She officially joined the Communist Party of Vietnam on October 11, 1986. She also took courses at the Hồ Chí Minh National Academy of Politics, where she earned an advanced degree in political theory.
Political Journey
Working with Youth
Trương Thị Mai spent many years working with the Hồ Chí Minh Communist Youth Union. In 1992, she was chosen to be a member of the Youth Union's Central Committee's Secretariat. She was re-elected to this role in 1997. In the same year, she became Vice President and General Secretary of the Vietnam Youth Federation.
In March 1998, she became the official President of the Vietnam Youth Federation. She was the first woman to lead this important organization. She continued as President until February 2003. From 1992 to 2002, she worked for the Youth Union Central Committee for 10 years.
Role in the National Assembly
Trương Thị Mai has been a member of the National Assembly of Vietnam since 1997. The National Assembly is like Vietnam's parliament, where laws are made. She represented different provinces over the years, including Cà Mau, Trà Vinh, and Bình Phước.
In 2007, she was elected to the Standing Committee of the National Assembly. She also became the Chairwoman of the National Assembly Social Affairs Committee. This committee deals with important issues like social welfare. She continued in these roles after being elected to the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam in 2011.
From 2011 to 2021, she represented the Lâm Đồng area in the National Assembly. In 2016, she received a large number of votes from her community.
Leading the Party
On January 26, 2016, Trương Thị Mai was elected a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam. The next day, she was chosen for the Politburo of the Communist Party of Vietnam. The Politburo is a very powerful group that guides the country.
Soon after, in February 2016, she became a member of the Secretariat of the Central Committee. She also became the Head of the Mass Mobilisation Commission of the Party. This role involves connecting with and organizing people across the country.
In May 2017, she became the President of the Vietnam - Cuba Friendship Association. This group helps build good relationships between Vietnam and Cuba.
Top Leadership Roles
In January 2021, she was re-elected to the Central Committee and the Politburo. On April 8, 2021, she was appointed Head of the Organization Commission of the Central Committee. She was the first woman to hold this important position. This role involves managing the Party's members and structure.
On March 6, 2023, Mai was appointed to an even higher role: Permanent Member of the Secretariat. She was the first woman to hold this position. She stepped down from this role on May 16, 2024.
