History of Tuckahoe
Tuckahoe gets its name from a special plant called the tuckahoe. This plant is actually a type of fungus, sometimes called "Indian Bread." It grew in large amounts in this area on the roots of certain trees.
Long ago, Native Americans, especially members of the Lenape tribes, would visit this area to gather the tuckahoe. They would grind it into a powder, like flour. This flour was then used for cooking and baking, often as an ingredient in their cornbread.
A bridge was built in 1926 to connect Tuckahoe to Corbin City, which is its neighbor to the north. This bridge was updated in 1961. Tuckahoe is also where the Cape May Seashore Lines Railroad has its main office.
