Tufan Erhürman (born on 11 September 1970) is a Turkish Cypriot politician and the current President of Northern Cyprus. He is also a respected academic and lawyer. Before becoming President, he served as the Prime Minister of Northern Cyprus from 2018 to 2019.
Erhürman was elected President of Northern Cyprus on 19 October 2025. He won the election with a large number of votes. He is also the leader of the Republican Turkish Party.
Early Life and Education
Tufan Erhürman completed his high school education at Türk Maarif Koleji. He then went on to study law at Ankara University in 1988. He continued his studies at Ankara University, earning advanced degrees. His research focused on how public authorities are overseen.
He taught public law at several universities. These included Ankara University, Middle East Technical University, and Hacettepe University from 1995 to 2001. Later, he taught at Eastern Mediterranean University and Near East University.
Political Journey
Tufan Erhürman first became involved in politics by helping with talks to find a solution for the Cyprus dispute between 2008 and 2010. These talks aimed to bring peace and agreement to the island.
In 2013, he was elected as a Member of Parliament for Nicosia. He represented the Republican Turkish Party. He worked hard to update the country's rulebook, called the constitution. Many changes were agreed upon by different political groups. However, in 2014, the public voted against these changes in a special vote called a referendum.
Erhürman became the leader of the Republican Turkish Party on 13 November 2016. This made him a key figure in the country's politics.
In 2018, he was reelected as a Member of Parliament. Soon after, he became the Prime Minister of Northern Cyprus in January 2018. He led a government made up of four different political parties. This government worked together until May 2019, when it resigned. Ersin Tatar then took over as Prime Minister.
On 19 October 2025, Tufan Erhürman won the 2025 Northern Cypriot presidential election. He became the new President of Northern Cyprus, succeeding Ersin Tatar.
Views on Cyprus
Tufan Erhürman believes in bringing Cyprus back together. He supports a plan where the island would be united under a system called a federal model. This means different parts of the island would have their own governments but would also be part of a larger, single country.
Election Results
Tufan Erhürman was elected President of Northern Cyprus in the 2025 presidential election. He received 87,137 votes, which was 63.76% of all votes. He defeated the previous president, Ersin Tatar.
