Ersin Tatar (born 7 September 1960) was the fifth President of Northern Cyprus. He served in this important role from 2020 until 2025. Before becoming President, he was the fourth Prime Minister of Northern Cyprus. He took on this role in 2019 after the previous government ended. He remained Prime Minister until he was elected President. Mr. Tatar was also the leader of the National Unity Party (UBP) and the Leader of the Opposition from 2018 until his election as President.

Who is Ersin Tatar?
Ersin Tatar is a politician from Northern Cyprus. He has held several key positions in his country's government. He is known for his work in both business and politics.
His Early Life and Education
Ersin Tatar was born in Nicosia, Cyprus, on 7 September 1960. His parents were Canev and Rüstem Tatar. His family has roots in Crimea and moved to Cyprus in the 1800s. His father was also involved in politics.
Mr. Tatar went to Forest School, a special school in England. Later, he studied economics at Cambridge University's Jesus College. He earned his degree in 1982.
His Career Before Politics
After finishing university, Mr. Tatar worked as an accountant in London from 1982 to 1986. He then worked for a company called Polly Peck until 1991.
In 1991, Mr. Tatar moved to Ankara, Turkey. He worked at FMC Nurol Defense Industry Co. until 1992. From 1992 to 2001, he was a manager for Show TV, a Turkish television channel. In 1996, he started his own television channel, Kanal T, in Nicosia. He was also active in the Turkish Cypriot community in Turkey. He led the Istanbul Turkish Cypriot Cultural Association from 1997 to 2001.
His Political Journey
Mr. Tatar began his political career in 2003. He joined the National Unity Party (UBP).
Key Political Roles
In 2009, he was first elected to the Parliament. He served as the Finance Minister under Derviş Eroğlu. He held this position until his party lost the election in 2013. In 2015, he tried to become the leader of the UBP but was not successful. He tried again in 2018 and won.
Mr. Tatar supported Turkey's actions in Syria in 2019. He stated that Turkish Cypriots always stand with Turkey. He also supports the idea of a two-state solution for the Cyprus dispute. This means having two separate states on the island of Cyprus.
The 2020 Presidential Election
One week before the 2020 Northern Cypriot presidential election, Mr. Tatar visited Turkey. While there, he announced plans to reopen the Varosha beachfront. This area had been closed since 1974. Many people in Northern Cyprus, the Republic of Cyprus, and other countries disagreed with this decision.
This decision also caused a disagreement with his Deputy Prime Minister, Kudret Özersay. This led to the government ending shortly before the election. Mr. Tatar stated he made the decision as Prime Minister, not as a candidate for the upcoming elections.
In the final round of the election on 18 October 2020, Mr. Tatar won with 51.69% of the votes. The President at the time, Mustafa Akıncı, received 48.31%. This was a very close election. Mr. Tatar officially took office on 23 October 2020.
The 2025 Presidential Election
Mr. Tatar sought re-election in the 2025 Northern Cypriot presidential election on October 19, 2025. However, he was not re-elected. Former Prime Minister Tufan Erhürman won the election with 62.76% of the votes, while Mr. Tatar received 35.81%.
Personal Life
Ersin Tatar is married to Sibel Tatar. They have two children together.
