The 2020 Presidential Election
Before the 2020 Northern Cypriot presidential election, Tatar visited Turkey. While there, he announced plans to reopen the beachfront area of Varosha. This area had been closed since 1974. His decision caused a lot of discussion. Many people in Northern Cyprus and the Republic of Cyprus were concerned.
His Deputy Prime Minister, Kudret Özersay, resigned. This led to the government of Northern Cyprus ending just one week before the election. Tatar said he made the decision about Varosha as Prime Minister, not as a candidate.
