Tufan Erhürman, born on September 11, 1970, is a politician from Northern Cyprus. He is a lawyer and a university teacher. Since October 24, 2025, he has been the President of Northern Cyprus.
He is an expert in public law. From 2008 to 2010, he helped with talks to find a solution for the Cyprus problem. Before that, he worked for the Ministry of Justice in Turkey from 1999 to 2004. He also helped create the role of an ombudsman in Turkey, which is like a public defender who helps people with government issues.
Mr. Erhürman is the leader of the Republican Turkish Party. He was also the Prime Minister of Northern Cyprus from January 2018 to May 2019. He led a government made up of four different political parties. On October 19, 2025, Mr. Erhürman won the 2025 Northern Cypriot presidential election. He received 62.76% of the votes, defeating the previous president, Ersin Tatar.
Education and Learning
Tufan Erhürman finished his high school education at Türk Maarif Koleji. In 1988, he started studying law at Ankara University. He continued his studies there, earning his master's degree and a PhD. His PhD research, completed in 2001, was about how public authorities can be checked by non-legal ways, like through an ombudsman.
Teaching Career
Mr. Erhürman taught public law at several universities. From 1995 to 2001, he lectured at Ankara University, Middle East Technical University, and Hacettepe University. He then taught at Eastern Mediterranean University from 2001 to 2006, and again from 2008 to 2013. He also taught at Near East University between 2006 and 2008.
Political Journey
Mr. Erhürman became involved in politics by joining talks to help solve the Cyprus problem between 2008 and 2010. This was during the time when Mehmet Ali Talat was President.
In 2013, he was elected as a Member of Parliament for Nicosia with the Republican Turkish Party. He worked hard to update the country's constitution. Many changes were agreed upon by all the political parties in parliament. However, in a public vote in 2014, most people did not approve the new constitution. He later became the Secretary General of his party.
In November 2016, Mr. Erhürman became the leader of the Republican Turkish Party. This also made him the leader of the main opposition group in parliament.
He was re-elected as a Member of Parliament in the 2018 elections. In January 2018, he led a group of four parties – the Republican Turkish Party, the People's Party, the Democratic Party, and the Communal Democracy Party – to form a new government. This government was known as the Erhürman cabinet. He served as Prime Minister until May 2019.
On October 19, 2025, Mr. Erhürman won the 2025 Northern Cypriot presidential election. He became the President of Northern Cyprus on October 24, 2025.
What He Believes In
Mr. Erhürman believes that Cyprus should be reunited as one country, working together under a federal system. He has also said that this would need the agreement of the government of Turkey.
