Tungsten is a ghost town located in Boulder County, Colorado. A ghost town is a place where people used to live and work, but now it's mostly empty. This former town is found north of Middle Boulder Creek.
History of Tungsten
The town of Tungsten got its name from a nearby mine that dug for a metal called tungsten. In 1916, a post office opened in Tungsten. It stayed open for many years until 1950.
It's a bit tricky to know exactly how many people lived in Tungsten or its exact size. Different old books and news reports tell slightly different stories. For example, a book from 1959 called Colorado Ghost Towns has some details that don't quite match what newspapers said back then.
However, we do know that in 1916, about 600 people were reported to be living in the town. Imagine a small community built around a mine, with people working and living there! Over time, as the mining slowed down, people moved away, and Tungsten became the ghost town it is today.
