History of Turabo
How Turabo Became Part of the United States
Puerto Rico used to be controlled by Spain. After the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of an agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898.
After this, Puerto Rico became an "unincorporated territory" of the United States. This means it's a place that belongs to the U.S. but is not a state.
Early Population Counts in Turabo
In 1899, the United States Department of War conducted a count of all the people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. The census found that 1,557 people lived in the Turabo barrio at that time.
