TMCC was created by the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians in 1972. The college officially received its charter in November 1972. A charter is like a special permission document. They also help improve the lives of American Indians and Alaska Natives. TMCC was created to meet the education needs of American Indians. It often serves people in areas that are far away from other colleges. This means TMCC helps students who might not have other ways to get an education after high school.
