How Turtle Mountain College Started
TMCC was created by the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians in 1972. It was started to help meet the education needs of American Indian people. In 1994, the college became a "land-grant" college. This special title helps the college offer more programs and support to its students.
Exploring the TMCC Campus
The main campus of TMCC is just north of a town called Belcourt. Belcourt is an important place for the Turtle Mountain tribe. It's where their government, businesses, and schools are located. The college has a large academic building that is about 165,000 square feet. It sits on a big piece of land, about 123 acres.
This main building has many different areas. You can find classrooms for science, math, and engineering. There are also labs for hands-on learning. The college has a library, places for students to study, and a student union where they can relax. There's even a gym and an auditorium for events. In 2008, a wind turbine was put up to help power the campus using clean energy.
What Can You Study at TMCC?
Turtle Mountain Community College offers many different types of degrees. Students can earn a Bachelor of Science degree, which is a four-year degree. They can also get Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, and Associate of Applied Science degrees. These are usually two-year programs. The college also offers special certificates for specific job skills.
Working Together: TMCC Partnerships
TMCC is part of a group called the American Indian Higher Education Consortium (AIHEC). This group helps colleges that serve tribal nations. They work to make tribal nations stronger and improve the lives of American Indians and Alaska Natives. TMCC helps people in areas that are far from other colleges. This means more students can get an education beyond high school.
TMCC Sports Teams
The sports teams at Turtle Mountain Community College are called the Mighty Mikinocks. They compete in the Northern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and the USCAA. The college has basketball teams for both men and women.
