The Lighthouse on Turtle Rock is a cool old lighthouse built way back in 1887. It helped boats on the Schuylkill River near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. A person named Frank Thurwanger built it.
The lighthouse has a special top part called a lantern room. This room is shaped like a hexagon. It also has a walkway around it. At first, the light used gas. But in 1990, it was updated to use electricity. It also got a fresh coat of paint!
The Sedgeley Club
The lighthouse is looked after by the Sedgeley Club. This club is a social group located at #15 Boathouse Row. This area is part of the famous Boathouse Row along the Schuylkill River. Boathouse Row is a very important historic place. It is even listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Sedgeley Club started in 1897. It was first called the Bicycle, Barge and Canoe Club. But they quickly changed the name to the Sedgeley Club. The club first used a different boathouse. Then, in 1902, they got permission to build their own.
A person named Arthur H. Brockie designed the new building. He made sure the design included the lighthouse, which was already there. The building looks like a shingle-style house. It also has a Colonial Revival style. The Sedgeley Club is still active today as a social club.
Friends of Historic Sedgeley
In 2012, a group called Friends of Historic Sedgeley was created. This group helps take care of the Sedgeley Club building. They work to keep it a historic landmark. They also teach people about the boathouse and the lighthouse. They do this through open houses and educational programs.
