What is Turun Sinappi?
Turun sinappi is a special kind of mustard known for its smooth texture and rich flavor. It's usually sold in bright yellow tubes that weigh 250 grams. This mustard is made from finely ground mustard seeds and a mix of different spices.
How It Started
Turun sinappi was first created in 1926 by a food company called Jalostaja, located in the city of Turku, Finland. That's how it got its name!
Different Flavors
Turun sinappi comes in four main types, each with a different colored cap to show its strength:
- Mieto (Mild): This one has a green cap and is the least spicy.
- Väkevä (Strong): You'll find this one with a red cap. It's the most popular type and has a unique, strong taste.
- Tulinen (Fiery): This version has a black cap and is the spiciest.
- Linnan sinappi (Mustard of the Castle): This type has a blue cap.
The logo on the tubes shows the famous Turku castle, which is a historic landmark in the city.
Where It's Made
Over the years, the place where Turun sinappi is made has changed a few times.
- For a while, after the original company was bought, the mustard was made in Uppsala, Sweden.
- Later, in 2008, production moved again to Poland.
- But good news for Finland! In 2014, the making of Turun sinappi moved back home to Finland.
A Similar Mustard
Because of the changes in where Turun sinappi was made, another Finnish company in Turku, Lunden, started making a mustard called Auran Sinappi. It uses a very similar recipe. Today, Auran Sinappi is also quite popular in Finland.
Famous Commercials
Many people in Finland remember Turun sinappi for its fun TV commercials. These ads were shown often on Finnish TV. The main slogan was "Kahta en vaihda", which means "There are two things that I'll never change."
The commercials often showed someone saying, "There are two things I'll never change. One of them is Turun sinappi and the other is..." The "other thing" would change in each ad, sometimes it wasn't even mentioned! A funny parody of the slogan that kids sometimes say is: "There are two things I'll never change: my socks."
