Who Were the Rulers of the 22nd Dynasty?
The pharaohs of the Twenty-second Dynasty were leaders from a group called the Meshwesh. The Meshwesh were an ancient tribe from ancient Libya. They had moved to Egypt much earlier, around the time of the Twentieth Dynasty. In Egypt, they were known as the 'Great Chiefs of the Ma'.
Where Did They Rule From?
These rulers governed Egypt from about 943 BC to 716 BC. Even though they were called the Bubastite Dynasty, their main capital was likely Tanis. Many of their tombs have been found there.
Important Pharaohs and Their Reigns
One pharaoh from this time was Tutkheperre Shoshenq. He ruled for a short time in the early 9th century BC. He came between Osorkon I and Takelot I. Later, after Shoshenq V, Osorkon IV became ruler at Tanis. Osorkon IV controlled only a small part of Lower Egypt.
