Osorkon I facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sekhemkheperre Osorkon I was an ancient Egyptian pharaoh. He was the second king of the 22nd Dynasty. Osorkon's kingdom included much of the Levant, an area in the Middle East.

A special stone carving called the Osorkon Bust was found in Byblos. It is one of the important royal writings from that city.

Osorkon I: A Powerful Egyptian Pharaoh

Osorkon I was the son of Shoshenq I and Queen Karomat A. He became the second king of Egypt's 22nd Dynasty. He ruled from about 922 BC to 887 BC. Osorkon I took over after his father, Shoshenq I, passed away. His father had won a battle against the Philistines and the kingdom of Israel around 923 BC.

A Long and Prosperous Reign

Osorkon I's time as pharaoh was long and successful. He ordered many new temples to be built. We know his reign lasted at least 33 years. This is because a mummy bandage was found with a necklace naming him. Other mummy bandages also show dates from his 11th, 12th, and 23rd years as king. These dates confirm his long rule. His throne name, Sekhemkheperre, means "Powerful are the Manifestations of Re."

Who Ruled After Osorkon I?

It is thought that Osorkon I was followed by his son, Takelot I. However, another ruler named Heqakheperre Shoshenq II might have ruled briefly between them. Takelot I's mother was Queen Tashedkhonsu, who was a secondary wife of Osorkon I.

The Mystery of Shoshenq II

Osorkon I's main wife was Queen Maatkare B. She might have been Shoshenq II's mother. However, Shoshenq II could also have been another son of Shoshenq I. This is because objects in Shoshenq II's tomb mention Shoshenq I.

Some experts believe Shoshenq II was a co-ruler with Osorkon I. They think he died before his father. Other experts believe Shoshenq II was an independent king. He ruled the 22nd Dynasty on his own for about two years.

Evidence for Shoshenq II's Rule

Shoshenq II used a full royal titulary, which is a set of royal names. He also had his own unique throne name, Heqakheperre. His tomb was found untouched at Tanis. It contained many treasures. These included jewelry, a silver coffin, and a gold face mask. These items suggest he was a true king of the 22nd Dynasty.

Also, Osorkon I's name was not found in Shoshenq II's tomb. This would be unusual if Osorkon I had buried his own son. These facts suggest that Shoshenq II ruled by himself.

Osorkon I's Legacy

Osorkon I's time as pharaoh was peaceful. However, his son, Takelot I, and grandson, Osorkon II, faced problems. They struggled to control Thebes and Upper Egypt. This was because they had to deal with a rival king named Harsiese A. Osorkon I's own tomb has never been found.
