Twiglets are a crunchy snack from the United Kingdom. They are made from wheat and look a bit like small, bumpy twigs. They have a speckled brown and pale color. The Story of Twiglets
Twiglets were invented in 1929 by a French baker named J. Rondalin. He worked at a factory called Peek Freans in Bermondsey. He came up with the idea by adding brewer's yeast to some leftover dough.
When Twiglets First Appeared
Twiglets were first sold to people in 1932 by Peek Freans. Today, a company called Jacob's, which is part of United Biscuits, makes Twiglets in Aintree.
How Twiglets Packaging Changed
For many years, especially around Christmas, Twiglets were sold in round metal boxes. These were seen as a fancy snack for parties from the 1930s to the 1970s. Now, you usually find them in large cardboard tubes with fun holiday designs.
Different Twiglets Flavors
In the early 1990s, a new flavor called tangy Worcester Sauce Twiglets was introduced. From 1999 to 2001, there was also a curry-flavored version. This was made with help from some Indian restaurants in Northern England. Later, from 2010 to 2012, the tangy Twiglets came back for a short time. This was to celebrate Twiglets' 80th birthday!
How Twiglets Get Their Crunch
Twiglets used to be made using special machines called hammer mills. These machines were at a place called Parker Brothers Lark Roller Mills. They were powered by water from the River Lark. This process broke the grains in a special way. It gave Twiglets their unique crunchy and bumpy shape. This water-powered mill worked until the late 1990s.
Celebrating Twiglets' Birthday
In August 2014, to celebrate Twiglets' 85th anniversary, United Biscuits held a special event. It was called Camp Twiglet. It took place on a farm in the Cotswolds owned by Blur's Alex James. There were even three wigwams made from Twiglets! A local artist named Mrs Cakehead created them.
