About Twm Morys
Twm Morys was born in 1961 in Oxford, England. His mother was the famous writer Jan Morris. He grew up in a place called Llanystumdwy in Wales.
Early Life and Education
Twm went to Ysgol y Llan, a local school in Wales. When he was seven, he went to Marshcourt school. Later, he attended Shrewsbury School.
He returned to Wales to study at Brecon High School. There, he took an A-level exam in the Welsh language. After high school, Twm Morys went to the University of Wales, Aberystwyth. He earned a degree in Celtic Studies, which is the study of the history, languages, and cultures of Celtic people. While at university, he won a special poetry award called the inter-collegiate chair. This award is given in a poetry competition between different universities.
Career as a Poet and Musician
Twm Morys has worked for BBC Radio Cymru. He started as a researcher and later became a poet and singer for the radio station.
He also lived in Brittany for ten years. While there, he worked as a lecturer at the University of Rennes.
Twm Morys has written several books of poetry. He also writes essays for magazines that review books. He worked with his mother, Jan Morris, on two books. These were Wales, the First Place (published in 1982) and A Machynlleth Triad/Triawd Machynlleth (published in 1994). He also adapted one of his mother's novels into Welsh. The Welsh version is called Ein Llyw Cyntaf (2001).
In 2003, Twm Morys won a major poetry award. He won the chair at the National Eisteddfod of Wales for his poem called Drysau (which means 'Doors').
He writes for television and radio shows. He also writes song lyrics and sings them with his folk-rock band, Bob Delyn a'r Ebillion.
Children's Poet Laureate
From 2009 to 2010, Twm Morys was the Bardd Plant Cymru. This title means he was the Welsh children's poet laureate. It's like being a special poet for children in Wales. Since 2011, he has been the editor of Barddas, a magazine about Welsh poetry.
Today, Twm Morys lives in Llanystumdwy, Wales.
