Two Ocean Lake is a beautiful lake located in Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming, a state in the United States. This lake was formed by glaciers, which are like giant, slow-moving rivers of ice. It is about 2.4 miles (3.9 km) long.
You can easily get to Two Ocean Lake from a nearby parking area. There's also a fun walking path called the Two Ocean Lake Trail. This trail is about 6.4 miles (10.3 km) long and goes all the way around the lake. As you walk, you'll pass through thick forests and open clearings. Another lake, called Emma Matilda Lake, is about one mile (1.6 km) south of Two Ocean Lake.
What's in a Name?
Two Ocean Lake is in the northeastern part of Grand Teton National Park, close to a town called Moran. The lake got its name from a place called Two Ocean Pass. This pass is about 25 miles (40 km) northeast of the lake.
At Two Ocean Pass, something very unique happens. A stream called Atlantic Creek flows east, and another stream called Pacific Creek flows west. This means water from the same area can end up in either the Atlantic Ocean or the Pacific Ocean!
However, Two Ocean Lake itself only flows into Pacific Creek. So, even though it's named after Two Ocean Pass, the lake's water only travels towards the Pacific Ocean. This makes its name a bit misleading, or a "misnomer."
