Two Rocks is a suburb located on the northern edge of Perth, the capital city of Western Australia. It is about 61 kilometres (38 mi) northwest of Perth's main city area. Two Rocks is part of the City of Wanneroo and is the most northern suburb in the Perth metropolitan region.
Even though the suburb covers a large area, most people used to live close to the coast around the Two Rocks marina. In recent years, more homes have been built to the east and southeast. Some parts of the suburb are fenced off because of old military items that are not safe.
A famous landmark in Two Rocks is a huge limestone statue of King Neptune. This statue was made by an American artist named Mark Le Buse. It is a reminder of the old Atlantis Marine Park, which was open from 1981 to 1990.
After the park closed, the statue was left alone and fenced off. In 2006, the Western Australian Heritage Council decided it was an important historical item. It was fixed up and the area around it was opened to the public again in May 2015.
Besides the marina, Two Rocks also has a small shopping centre and a public library. There are two schools in the area: Atlantis Beach Baptist College (a private school) and Two Rocks Primary School (a public school).
History of Two Rocks
The name Two Rocks comes from two large rocks that are offshore from Wreck Point. The name was officially approved for the suburb in 1975.
Two Rocks was once home to the Atlantis Marine Park. It was also a key part of Alan Bond's big plan called Yanchep Sun City in the 1980s. Sun City was the first project in Western Australia where private companies invested in homes, shops, and fun activities.
Because of its history, the Sun City area was added to the State Register of Heritage Places in January 2023. This area includes the marina, the shopping centre, the King Neptune statue, and where the Atlantis Marine Park used to be.
A large bushfire in 1991 destroyed many homes in the suburb. Another big bushfire in December 2019 also affected large parts of Two Rocks. This fire burned over 14,000 hectares over several days and came very close to Two Rocks Primary School.
