Tyndale Baptist Church is a Baptist church located in Redland, a part of Bristol, England. It stands on Whiteladies Road.

History of Tyndale Baptist Church

Tyndale Baptist Church was started in 1869. Another church, Broadmead Baptist Church, wanted to create a new church for the growing number of people in the Redland area.

Building the Church

Money to build the church was collected by a group led by E. S. Robinson. He was famous for starting a paper and packaging company called E. S. & A. Robinson. He was also the mayor of Bristol in 1866.

The first minister, or leader, of the church was Richard Glover. He was a very important person in the Baptist church community. He worked at Tyndale Baptist Church until 1911.

Important People from the Church

Many people from Tyndale Baptist Church became important in Bristol.

  • Sir Herbert Ashman was the very first Lord Mayor of Bristol in 1899. A Lord Mayor is like the main leader of a city.
  • Edward Robinson, who was E. S. Robinson's son, also became Lord Mayor in 1908.
  • Charles Townsend was a Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Bristol North. An M.P. is a person elected to represent an area in the country's government. He was also the church secretary for over 20 years.

Beautiful Stained Glass Windows

During World War II, in 1941, the church was damaged by bombs during the Bristol Blitz. This was a time when German planes bombed Bristol.

The church was rebuilt and opened again in 1955. Inside the new church, you can see amazing stained glass windows. These windows were made by Arnold Robinson. He was the grandson of E. S. Robinson, who helped build the church.

Special Window Designs

The most beautiful windows are at each end of the church's transept (a part of the church that crosses the main area).

  • One window shows scenes from a famous book called "Pilgrim's Progress" by John Bunyan.
  • The other window tells the story of William Tyndale. He was an important person who translated the Bible into English a long time ago.
