Tyrone Davis (born June 30, 1972 – died October 2, 2022) was an American professional football player. He played as a tight end in the National Football League (NFL) for eight seasons. Tyrone played for the New York Jets and the Green Bay Packers from 1995 to 2002. Before that, he played college football for the Virginia Cavaliers.

Early Life and College Football

Tyrone Davis was born in Halifax, Virginia, on June 30, 1972. He went to Halifax County High School first. Later, he finished his high school studies at Fork Union Military Academy.

After high school, Tyrone went to the University of Virginia. He played wide receiver for the Virginia Cavaliers college team. He played there from 1991 to 1994.

In 1992, he was a top player in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). He led the conference in receiving yards per catch. He also had the second-most receiving touchdowns that year. Two years later, in 1994, he led the conference in receiving touchdowns again. He set a new school record for career touchdown receptions with 28. This record was previously held by Herman Moore.

The New York Jets picked Tyrone Davis in the 1995 NFL Draft. He was the 107th player chosen overall.

Professional Football Career

Tyrone Davis started his NFL career with the New York Jets. His first game was on September 3, 1995. He was 23 years old at the time.

Before his second season, Tyrone changed his playing position. He moved from being a wide receiver to a tight end. In August 1997, he was traded to the Green Bay Packers. That year, he was one of the top players for fumble return touchdowns.

The Packers made it to the Super Bowl XXXII that season. However, they lost to the Denver Broncos in the championship game. Tyrone Davis did not play in that Super Bowl.

Later in his NFL career, Tyrone faced some challenges with his physical condition. This affected his ability to play. He had surgery in July 2001 for a torn hamstring. This injury kept him from playing for most of the 2001 NFL season. In 2003, he was released by the Packers. This happened after he had a difficult time at training camp.

Later Life

Tyrone Davis passed away on October 2, 2022. He was 50 years old.
