Uładzimir Katkoŭski (born June 19, 1976, in Minsk, died May 25, 2007) was a very important person for the internet in Belarus. He was a blogger, a web designer, and he created many websites. He helped make the internet a place where people could use the Belarusian language.

About Uładzimir Katkoŭski

Uładzimir Katkoŭski studied computer science at the American University in Bulgaria. This university is in a city called Blagoevgrad. After he finished his studies, he worked with computers in different cities like Budapest and Frankfurt am Main. From 2002, he started working for the Belarusian part of Radio Free Europe.

Sadly, on June 16, 2006, Uładzimir and his wife were in a car crash in Prague. Uładzimir was in a coma for almost a year. He passed away on May 25, 2007.

His Work on the Internet

In the middle of the 1990s, Uładzimir Katkoŭski became one of the first people to use and develop the internet in Belarusian language. He was a true pioneer!

Creating Websites

In the late 1990s, Uładzimir worked with his future wife and other Belarusian internet users. Together, they created a popular website about Belarusian history called Litvania.

Uładzimir was also one of the first and most well-known bloggers in the Belarusian language. His blog was known as rydel23. In 2006, a top Belarusian website called TUT.by gave him an award for his blog, br23.net.

He also created other important websites:

  • Pravapis.org: This website was all about the Belarusian language and its rules.
  • Martyraloh Biełarusi: This means "The Belarusian Martyrologe." It was a website about people who suffered during the time of Stalinist terror in Belarus.

Helping Google and Wikipedia

Uładzimir Katkoŭski helped translate the internet search engine Google into Belarusian. This made it easier for many people to use Google in their own language.

He was also one of the people who helped start the Belarusian Wikipedia. This means he was part of creating the online encyclopedia that many people use today to learn about different topics in Belarusian.

Finally, he was the person who created and managed the website for the Belarusian part of Radio Free Europe.
