Football Club Pro Vercelli 1892, often called Pro Vercelli, is an Italian football club. It is located in Vercelli, a city in Piedmont, Italy. The club is well-known for being one of the most successful teams in Italy's early football history. They won seven national titles between 1908 and 1922. Currently, Pro Vercelli plays in Serie C, which is the third level of Italian football.

Club History and Success

Early Triumphs and Challenges

The story of football in Vercelli began in 1892. That year, the Società Ginnastica Pro Vercelli (Pro Vercelli Gymnastics Society) was founded. Its football division started in 1903.

The first official football match for Pro Vercelli was on August 3, 1903. They played against a team called Forza e Costanza.

Pro Vercelli won seven Italian Football Championships. These victories happened between 1908 and 1922. The years they won were: 1908, 1909, 1910–11, 1911–12, 1912–13, 1920–21, and 1921–22.

Over time, Italian football became more professional. Teams from bigger cities like Milan and Turin grew stronger. This led to a slow decline for Pro Vercelli. They last played in Serie A (Italy's top league) in the 1934–35 season. After that, they were even relegated to Serie D, an amateur league, several times. They returned to professional football after winning the Scudetto Dilettanti in the 1993–94 season.

A New Beginning for Pro Vercelli

In the early 2000s, a new team appeared in Vercelli. This team was called A.S. Pro Belvedere Vercelli. It was formed in 2006 by combining two other teams.

Pro Belvedere played in Serie D. In the 2008–09 Serie D season, they won their division. This earned them promotion to Lega Pro Seconda Divisione.

Meanwhile, the original Pro Vercelli club faced big financial problems. They were not allowed to play in the 2010–11 Lega Pro Seconda Divisione season and had to close down. To keep the history of Pro Vercelli alive, Pro Belvedere changed its name to U.S. Vercelli Calcio. A few weeks later, they took on the old Pro Vercelli's history and team identity. This allowed them to use the famous name and white colors of the original club.

In the 2010–11 season, the team played well. They finished 3rd in Lega Pro Seconda Divisione. They were later moved up to Lega Pro Prima Divisione to fill open spots.

Return to Serie B

In the 2011–12 Lega Pro Prima Divisione season, Pro Vercelli achieved a great success. They were promoted to Serie B (the second-highest league) after 64 years. They won their play-off final against Carpi with a 3–1 score.

Their return to Serie B in the 2012–13 season was tough. They finished near the bottom and were relegated back to Lega Pro Prima Divisione.

However, Pro Vercelli quickly bounced back. In the 2013–14 season, they finished second in their league. They then won the promotion play-offs. This meant they returned to Serie B after just one season away. They stayed in Serie B for a few more seasons. In 2018, they were relegated to Serie C again. On July 11, 2019, famous former Italian player Alberto Gilardino became their head coach.

Team Colors and Badge

The traditional color for Pro Vercelli's shirts is white. This is why one of their nicknames is Le Bianche Casacche, meaning "The White Shirts."
