Getting Ready for the Big Event
Before the event, some changes had to be made to the fight card.
- A fighter named Rory MacDonald was supposed to fight B.J. Penn. But Rory got a cut on his forehead while training, so their fight was moved to a later date.
- Roger Hollett was set to fight Matt Hamill, who was coming back from retirement. However, Roger had a problem with his contract. So, Vladimir Matyushenko stepped in to fight Matt. Then, Vladimir got hurt too, so Roger Hollett was brought back to fight Matt Hamill after all!
- A fight between Evan Dunham and TJ Grant was originally planned for the main part of the show. But for some reason, it was moved to an earlier part of the event.
- Because another UFC event (UFC 151) was cancelled, the fight between Kyle Noke and Charlie Brenneman was moved to UFC 152.
- Dan Miller was going to fight Sean Pierson. But Dan had to pull out because his son needed a kidney transplant operation. Lance Benoist took his place.
- At the weigh-ins, a fighter named Charles Oliveira was a tiny bit over the weight limit at first. But he tried again and made the weight. His opponent agreed to fight him anyway, so it was okay.
The Main Fight
The biggest fight of the night was for the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship. The champion, Jon Jones, was set to defend his title against former champion Vitor Belfort.
Originally, Jon Jones was supposed to fight Dan Henderson at UFC 151. But Dan got hurt, and the UFC asked Jon Jones to fight Chael Sonnen instead on short notice. Jon Jones said no, and because of that, UFC 151 was cancelled. This was the first time the UFC had ever cancelled an event after the fights were announced!
After UFC 151 was cancelled, the UFC wanted Jon Jones to fight Lyoto Machida at UFC 152. But Lyoto Machida also turned down the fight. So, Vitor Belfort stepped up to challenge Jon Jones for the championship. Many people thought Jon Jones would win easily. It was later said that Vitor Belfort fought Jon Jones with a broken hand.
