Brian Stann was born in Japan at a U.S. military base. He grew up in Scranton, Pennsylvania. After high school, he went to the United States Naval Academy in 1999. While there, he played football as a middle linebacker for the Navy team.

After graduating, Stann became an officer in the United States Marine Corps. He eventually reached the rank of captain. In 2005, during the Iraq War, his unit faced a tough situation. They were attacked by enemies while trying to secure a bridge. Stann and his 42 Marines fought for six days under heavy attack. Thanks to his leadership, all 42 Marines survived.

For his bravery, Stann received the Silver Star medal in 2006. This is one of the highest awards for courage in combat. His actions were even mentioned by then-President George W. Bush. Stann left active duty in the Marine Corps in 2008. The Marine Corps still uses his story to inspire new recruits. Stann says his military training helped him succeed in mixed martial arts.

Brian Stann's Mixed Martial Arts Career

Brian Stann started his fighting career in 2006 while still serving in the Marines. He used his vacation time to train and compete.

World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC)

On March 26, 2008, Stann won the WEC Light Heavyweight championship. He defeated Doug Marshall by knockout. This win made his fighting record 6 wins and 0 losses.

In August 2008, Stann lost his WEC title in his first defense. He fought Steve Cantwell in a rematch.

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC)

In 2008, the WEC and UFC combined their heavier weight classes. This meant Stann would now fight in the UFC. His first UFC fight was in April 2009. He lost this fight to Krzysztof Soszynski. Stann later said he wasn't fully ready for the grappling part of the fight.

Stann then had a rematch with Steve Cantwell in September 2009. This time, Stann won by a unanimous decision. This was his first fight that went all the way to the judges' decision. He also won against Rodney Wallace in December 2009.

In February 2010, Stann lost to Phil Davis. After this fight, Stann decided to move down to the middleweight division. This meant he would fight against lighter opponents.

His first middleweight fight was in August 2010 against Mike Massenzio. Stann won this fight by making Massenzio give up using a "triangle choke." This was his first win by submission. This exciting fight also earned him a "Fight of the Night" bonus.

On New Year's Day 2011, Stann fought Chris Leben. He won by TKO (Technical Knockout) in the first round. This was a big win for him.

Stann was supposed to fight Wanderlei Silva, a famous fighter, in May 2011. But Silva was replaced by Jorge Santiago. Stann defeated Santiago by TKO in the second round. This fight also earned him a "Fight of the Night" bonus.

In October 2011, Stann lost to Chael Sonnen. Then, in April 2012, he fought Alessio Sakara. Stann won by knockout in the first round. After knocking Sakara out, Stann showed great sportsmanship. He stopped hitting Sakara and signaled to the referee that the fight was over. Many people, including UFC President Dana White, praised Stann for this action. They said it was "good for the sport."

Stann had to pull out of a fight in August 2012 due to a shoulder injury. He then lost to Michael Bisping in September 2012.

His long-awaited fight with Wanderlei Silva finally happened on March 3, 2013, in Japan. Stann lost the fight by knockout in the second round. However, it was a very exciting fight, and both fighters received a "Fight of the Night" bonus.

On July 11, 2013, Brian Stann announced he was retiring from mixed martial arts. After retiring, he became a commentator and analyst for Fox Sports and the UFC. In 2017, Stann left his commentary job to work as a real estate executive.

Professional Fighters League (PFL)

In May 2018, Brian Stann took on an advisory role with the Professional Fighters League (PFL). He became the head of the Fighter and Competition/Rules Committee. In this role, he helps the PFL manage tournaments and support fighters.
