Brian Michael Stann, born on September 24, 1980, is an American hero. He was a brave U.S. Marine and a skilled mixed martial artist. He fought in major competitions like the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). He was also a champion in World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC). After his fighting career, he became a sports commentator for the UFC and football games.

Brian Stann's Early Life and Military Service
Brian Stann was born in Japan at Yokota Air Base. He grew up in Scranton, Pennsylvania, in the United States. He went to Scranton Preparatory School. Later, he joined the United States Naval Academy in 1999.
While at the Naval Academy, Brian played football. He was a middle linebacker for the Midshipmen team. After graduating, he became an infantry officer in the United States Marine Corps. He eventually reached the rank of captain.
Heroic Actions in Iraq
In May 2005, Brian Stann was a lieutenant. He led the 2nd Mobile Assault Platoon during the Iraq War. His unit was attacked by enemies near the Ramana Bridge. Stann and his 42 Marines fought for six days under heavy fire. They used air and tank support to defend themselves. All 42 Marines in his platoon survived the intense battle.
Receiving the Silver Star
In March 2006, Brian Stann received the Silver Star. This is the third-highest award for bravery in combat. The award recognized his leadership and courage. He directed rescue operations and air support during the fight. His actions were even mentioned by President George W. Bush. Brian left active duty in the Marine Corps in May 2008. The Marine Corps still uses his story to inspire new recruits.

Brian Stann started his fighting career in 2006. He was still serving in the military at the time. He used his leave time to train and compete.
Becoming a WEC Champion
On March 26, 2008, Brian Stann won a big fight. He defeated Doug Marshall by knockout. This made him the WEC Light Heavyweight champion. He had a perfect record of 6 wins and 0 losses at that point. In August 2008, he lost his title in a rematch against Steve Cantwell.
Fighting in the UFC
In 2008, the WEC merged some of its weight classes with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). Brian Stann then joined the UFC.
First UFC Fights
Brian Stann's first UFC fight was in April 2009. He faced Krzysztof Soszynski and lost by submission. He later said he couldn't train enough for the grappling part of the fight. In September 2009, he fought Steve Cantwell again. This time, Stann won by a unanimous decision. This was his first fight that went the full distance. He also defeated Rodney Wallace by decision in December 2009.
Moving to Middleweight
In February 2010, Stann lost to Phil Davis. After this fight, he decided to move to a lighter weight class. He moved down to the 185-pound Middleweight division.
Success as a Middleweight
Brian Stann made his middleweight debut in August 2010. He won against Mike Massenzio by submission. This fight was so exciting that it won "Fight of the Night" honors. On New Year's Day 2011, he defeated Chris Leben by TKO in the first round. This was a big win for him.
He then fought Jorge Santiago in May 2011. Stann won by TKO in the second round. This fight also earned "Fight of the Night" honors. In October 2011, he lost to Chael Sonnen by submission.
Showing Good Sportsmanship
In April 2012, Brian Stann fought Alessio Sakara. Stann knocked Sakara out in the first round. After the knockout, Stann immediately signaled to the referee that Sakara was out. He did not throw any extra punches. This action was highly praised by fans and other fighters. UFC President Dana White called him "one of the classiest people on Earth!"
Later Fights and Retirement
Brian Stann faced Michael Bisping in September 2012 and lost by decision. His last fight was in March 2013 against Wanderlei Silva. Stann lost by knockout in a very exciting fight. This fight also won "Fight of the Night" honors.
On July 11, 2013, Brian Stann announced his retirement from mixed martial arts. After retiring, he became an analyst and commentator for Fox Sports and the UFC. In August 2017, he left his commentary job to work as a real estate executive.
Life After Fighting
Brian Stann is married to Michelle, and they have five daughters. They live in Milton, Georgia. For nine years, Brian was the president and CEO of Hire Heroes USA. This is a nonprofit organization that helps U.S. military veterans find jobs. He has also held leadership roles in real estate companies.
In 2010, Brian Stann published his book, "Heart for the Fight: A Marine Hero's Journey from the Battlefields of Iraq to Mixed Martial Arts Champion." The book shares his life story. It covers his childhood, his time playing football, his brave service as a Marine in Iraq, and his journey to becoming a WEC champion.
